Resilience, Love, and Subversion

Upon entering Via del Turchino, you can read the three monumental letters A, M, A, on the facades of the Quartiere Ettore Ponti, a housing unit located in the Calvairate / Ortomercato area, a suburb of the city of Milano, Italy, known as a troubled zone, inhabited mainly by migrants, veterans and survivors of World War II and their descendants.

As you enter the avenue, the word AMA dominates the landscape, with its large letters. However, as Borges pointed out, more than being an imperative voice, the message read here is an invitation, a polyphonic call that proposes a change in attitude, an openness to listening, to bond, to share.

The word love has been conceptualized in very different ways throughout history and is the subject of all kinds of discourses: poetic, literary, religious, moral, among others. It has been spoken of many types of love. Some have been considered sinful, forbidden, even dissidents; others, on the other hand, have become the norm and the model that sustains the main social institutions. However, in this work, Said Dokins raises a notion of love from a different perspective: not as an internal state of the individual, but as a social action, as a weapon of resistance against a context that isolates us within the mass, where forging solid bonds of empathy, and solidarity is subversive

Stories of a Word

To carry out this intervention, Dokins immersed himself in the history of the residential complex – a consistent example of the fascist and rationalist architecture of the late 1930s – and of its inhabitants through his celebrated series Stories of a Word. This project, which has been developed in very diverse countries, in unique contexts, consists of the recovery of community narratives in order to inscribe the collective memory. Through dialogue and coexistence with local people, the artist collects the words that will serve to develop his mural proposals.

On this occasion, through interviews, meetings and activities organized by Dokins in collaboration with Biokip Lab, he managed to establish a deep dialogue with the community that allowed him to learn about the history of the neighborhood, mainly through the elderly, who related the disasters of war and fascism, as well as the new experiences they are facing. Young people and children also participated, sharing their wishes and expectations for the future.

“This project is about creating a comfortable place for knowledge and memory. The dialogue with the inhabitants of Via del Turchino, made me think about anecdotes and personal stories as a source of knowledge, when a person feels comfortable telling something, they can share very deep information, that in another situation they wouldn’t reveal… The process wasn’t easy, first, they believed that I was another politician of those that promise lots of things, then they realized that it was just about sharing”

Love Collectively

The result of this collaborative experience was an assemblage of meaning: Arte, Passione, Rispetare, Fraternità, Resilenza are some of the words and phrases that make up the framework of the background where it is wrapped in the AMA palindrome, which includes three of the great facade walls.

These words refer to the place, to the stories lived there, to the wishes and hopes of its inhabitants, and of course, to their names, recognizing the importance of each and everyone who is part of this place; thus, the Dokins murals give an account of the tensions and contradictions of the neighborhood, at the same time that they position a message of connection, respect, memory and freedom within the community. Through art, AMA reveals the radical and transformative potential of love, as Hartl would say, as a collective generating force.

Resiliencia, amor y suvbersión

Al entrar a Via del Turchino, pueden leerse las tres letras monumentales A, M, A, sobre las fachadas del Quartiere Ettore Ponti, unidad habitacional ubicada en el área de Calvairate / Ortomercato. suburbio de la ciudad de Milano, Italia, una zona conflictiva, habitada principalmente por migrantes, veteranos y sobrevivientes de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y sus descendientes.

Al adentrarse en la avenida, la palabra AMA domina el paisaje, con sus grandes letras. Sin embargo, como bien apuntaba Borges, más que ser una voz imperativa, el mensaje que aquí se lee es una invitación, un llamado polifónico que propone un cambio de actitud, una apertura a la escucha, al vínculo, a compartir.

La palabra amor ha sido conceptualizada de maneras muy distintas a lo largo de la historia y es materia de discursos toda índole: poéticos, literarios, religiosos, morales, cotidianos, entre otros. Se habla de numerosos tipos de amor. Algunos han sido consideradas pecaminosos, prohibidos, incluso, disidentes; otros, en cambio, se han transformado en la norma y el modelo que sostiene las principales instituciones sociales. Sin embargo, en esta obra, Said Dokins plantea una noción de amor desde una perspectiva diferente: no como un estado interno del individuo, sino como acción social, como un arma de resistencia frente a un contexto que nos aísla dentro de la masa, en donde forjar vínculos sólidos de empatía y solidaridad es subversivo.

Historias de una palabra

Para realizar esta intervención, Dokins se sumergió en la historia del complejo residencial -un consistente ejemplo de la arquitectura fascista y racionalista de finales de los años treinta-, y de sus habitantes a través de su celebrada serie Historias de una palabra. Dicho proyecto, que ha desarrollado en países muy diversos, en singulares contextos, consiste en la recuperación de narrativas comunitarias con el fin de inscribir la memoria colectiva. A través del diálogo y la convivencia con las personas locales, el artista recolecta las palabras que servirán para desarrollar su propuesta mural.

En esta ocasión, mediante entrevistas, encuentros y actividades organizadas por Dokins en colaboración con Biokip Lab, el artista logró establecer un diálogo profundo con la comunidad que le permitió conocer la historia del barrio, principalmente a través de las personas mayores, quienes relataron los desastres de la guerra y el fascismo, así como las nuevas experiencias que enfrentan. También los jóvenes y niños participaron, compartiendo sus deseos y expectativas hacia el futuro.

‘Este proyecto se trata de crear un espacio confortable para el conocimiento y la memoria, el diálogo con las personas de Via del Turchino me hizo pensar en la anécdota como forma de conocimiento, la persona se siente más en confianza contando algo y pueden llegar a darnos información muy profunda que de otro modo se autocensurarían….. El proceso no fue fácil, al principio creían que yo era uno más de esos políticos que prometen cosas, después se dieron cuenta que solo se trababa de compartir’

Amar en colectivo

El resultado de esta experiencia colaborativa fue un ensamble de significado: Arte, Passione, Rispetare, Fraternità, Resilenza son algunas de las palabras y frases que conforman el entramado del fondo en donde se encuentra envuelto en el palíndromo AMA, que abarca tres de los grandes muros de la fachada.

Dichas palabras hacen referencia al lugar, a las historias ahí vividas, a los deseos y esperanzas de sus habitantes, y por su puesto, a sus nombres, reconociendo la importancia de todas y todos quienes forman parte de este lugar; así, los murales de Dokins dan cuenta de las tensiones y contradicciones del barrio, a la vez que posicionan un mensaje de conexión, respeto, memoria y libertad dentro de la comunidad. A través del arte, AMA revela el potencial radical y transformador del amor, en palabras de Hartl, como fuerza colectiva generadora.
